G-Tube Pads: Form vs Function
There are a lot of g-tube pads out there…a lot.  You can Google, Facebook, and Tweet your hearts desire to find just the g-tube pad you are looking for.  But really, WHAT is it you are looking for?  Cutie-tubies, adult pads, stylish designer pads?  I am going to discuss Form vs Function aspects of g-tube pads.  In fact, I think I’ll give you the top 5 reasons you should choose function over form. Just remember this; my blog…my opinions.

Here are the top 5 reasons to choose a g-tube pad that will work the way it is intended:

1.  Fleece
Choose fleece for your bottom layer if you need an absorbent material.  Granulation tissue leaks cream colored goo.  Not pleasant.  Fleece facilitates moisture transfer.  Fleece wicks moisture away from the skin to its outer surface where it will absorb into another fabric-usually a cotton ‘soaker’ of some sort.

2.  Terry Cloth
Terry cloth acts as the ‘soaker’ layer.  Whatever the fleece brings in through moisture transfer, terry cloth holds it in the middle layer AWAY from the skin.

3.  Seam Stitches
Those tightly woven stitches that are use on decorative pads are beautiful.  So pretty.  However, they do not allow moisture to transfer into the ‘soaker’ layer.  Most threads are cotton/polyester which does not absorb…at all.  If you are looking for a functional pad, look for fabric that sits next to the skin…not thread.

4.  Cut Outs
You know what I’m talking about right?  The pads that have an actual circle for the tube.  This is not function.  The pad MUST sit next to the skin to absorb.  It must wrap tightly around the tube.

5.  Velcro vs Snaps
Velcro is the best invention EVER!  But does it work for g-tube pads?  Personally I think not.  In my experience, I’ve noticed that if not secured properly…it can really scratch up the skin.  Also, they stick to everything!  Laundry room disaster…don’t ask.

Well, that’s about it.  My two cents.  If your “tuber” does not leak and you want something “pretty” to stand out on special occasions, the decorative g-tube pads are a lot of fun.  But quite pricey.  For everyday use, my “tuber” will be wearing the latest functional g-tube pad.  Like these!
